National Institute for Nuclear Physics | Ferrara Division

The experiment studies various aspects of neutron stars, investigating their microphysics and its relationship with the structure and composition of compact stars. This research is linked to some of the most active areas of theoretical and observational astrophysics and aims to clarify fundamental problems of supra-nuclear density matter, such as the possible production of hyperons and the formation of strange deconfined quark matter. In Ferrara we explore the possible presence of deconfined quarks in compact stars, also by carrying out numerical simulations of mergers and extracting the signal in gravitational waves. We have also proposed the co-existence of strange quark stars and stars made of hadrons.
