Storm

The main goal of the STORM experiment is the investigation of beam interactions with strong crystalline electromagnetic fields, with a focus on the study of crystalline materials/configurations that are interesting for application in current and future accelerators/detectors.

Indeed, the huge photon emission enhancement by high-energy particles in oriented crystals could be exploited to increase the production of e+ for future colliders, in particular for FCC-ee, which has been recently highlighted by the EU Strategy as the next possible collider.

Furthermore, the acceleration of electromagnetic showers in oriented crystals opens the way to the development of ultra-compact calorimeters based on oriented crystals, in which the amount of material can be strongly reduced with respect to the state of the art. These devices could have relevant applications in fixed-target experiments, as well as in satellite-borne γ telescopes.
